Nicholas Buhite completed his law and undergraduate degrees at the University of Toronto. In 2019, he received his Honours Bachelor of Arts with a specialty in History and a major in International Relations, followed by a J.D. in 2022. Following his first year of law school, Nicholas co-authored a report on COVID-19 driven police incidents during the early days of the pandemic. Following his second year of law school, he worked at a law firm specializing in criminal law. He completed his articles with Caramanna Friedberg LLP and joined the firm as an associate lawyer following his call to the bar in June 2023.
While studying law, Nicholas routinely attended Criminal Lawyers Association events and volunteered extensively with Innocence Canada, Pro-Bono Students Canada, and the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. He spent a year working for Downtown Legal Services’ Criminal and Academic Offences Division, providing assistance to both low-income individuals seeking help on criminal matters and university students facing academic offence allegations. In law school, he served as an Associate Editor for the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review and as an Editor for the University of Toronto Criminal Law Student’s Association’s monthly publication Crimes, Courts, and Commentary.
Nicholas spent most of his life wishing to be a criminal lawyer. He first became interested in practicing criminal law after several years of volunteering with a youth diversion program in high school and went to law school with the sole intent of practicing criminal law. He has a lifetime of oral advocacy experience, having participated in mock trial and appellate moot court activities as a competitor, team executive, and coach from high school until his call to the bar. When his schedule allows, Nicholas continues to serve as a judge for the University of Toronto’s law student moots.
Nicholas is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Criminal Lawyers Association, and the Toronto Lawyers Association.
