How long is a Dangerous Offender Designation valid for?
The effects of a Dangerous Offender Designation will vary substantially depending on the sentence imposed.
If an indefinite sentence is given, a “Dangerous Offender” will functionally be given a life sentence. Even if they receive parole from custody, they will remain under parole supervision for the remainder of their life.
If a sentence and Long-Term Supervision Order are made, the Long-Term Supervision Order will remain in place a maximum of 10 years after warrant expiry (the completion of the original sentence, including any time spend on parole).
Even when the sentence associated with a Dangerous Offender Designation is complete, a prior Dangerous Offender Designation on your criminal record can create significant and life-long difficulties in a wide variety of contexts including employment, immigration, and future legal matters.
